The Challenge

For over 35 years, Vocational Language Learning Centre (VLLC) has empowered students across Australia to master new languages through personalised courses across 15 languages.

Their original learning platform was a legacy .NET desktop application – robust but aging, and difficult to access outside Windows environments, severely limiting user flexibility and platform reach.

VLLC faced critical barriers:

  • Legacy Complexity: A complex .NET codebase, compounded by limited legacy developer access severely hindered maintenance.
  • Cross-Platform Restrictions: The desktop-only setup excluded Mac and mobile users, undermining the user experience.
  • Integration Constraints: Dependence on legacy SOAP services created additional compatibility challenges.
  • Outdated User Interface: The aging UI negatively impacted user experience and required redesign.
  • Limited Documentation: Sparse documentation increased difficulty in maintaining and enhancing the platform.

Replacing the entire system was neither feasible nor economical.

The Solution

Leveraging AI technologies, Kiandra demonstrated how modern AI-driven development techniques can rejuvenate legacy systems:

  • AI-Enhanced Legacy Code Analysis: GenAI tools analysed and deciphered intricate .NET code, dramatically cutting down manual review and bridging critical knowledge gaps due to limited access to the former developers.
  • Automated Documentation and Integration: AI generated essential documentation and new integration layers with existing SOAP services, significantly simplifying backend compatibility.
  • Rapid Front-End Evolution: AI-driven development swiftly generated responsive, user-friendly interfaces, eliminating the need for specialised front-end designers and reducing UI development effort by 70%.

The Outcome

Kiandra’s innovative AI approach successfully transitioned VLLC’s legacy desktop platform into a responsive, web-based solution, without a costly system replacement:

  • Accessibility Transformed: Students can now effortlessly access courses across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
  • Significant Efficiency Gains: AI cut development times by 50%, ensuring the project was delivered promptly within budget.
  • Future-Proofed Systems: The revitalised platform sets the stage for ongoing enhancements, scalability, and sustained modernisation.

VLLC’s CEO, Michele Colledge was thrilled with the results, saying “The final product has met all expectations. It’s fresh looking and functional on all devices, offering a seamless experience for users. What really stood out was Kiandra’s commitment to timeliness—
they delivered everything on or before schedule and were always available for feedback or any questions we had along the way.”
