PARC is recognised as one of Victoria’s preeminent sport, recreation and leisure facilities, focused on delivering exceptional customer experiences.

The $49.7 million facility was opened in 2014 and already boasts over 10,000 members and more than 850,000 visits per annum. Not only has PARC positively impacted on the health and wellbeing of the community, it has provided employment for over 300 people in the local and surrounding region.

As a premier leisure facility, PARC has ambitious technology goals to ensure it is leading the way for customer experience in the sport and leisure market. To achieve these goals, being at the forefront of technology is imperative, however PARC was experiencing a situation common to many organisations — it was running a mixed environment, supporting a range of devices, running off different operating systems. While PARC was initially set up on Windows 7, users upgraded their machines to Windows 10 after receiving an incentive direct from Microsoft. This resulted in an inconsistent environment, where users were experiencing common issues — predominantly with applications and drivers.

For PARC, a key success factor in its Strategic Plan included the introduction of information systems that make it easy for users and employees to connect with the centre.

PARC identified that to achieve this, it needed to develop a technology roadmap that would accelerate mobility, improve productivity, ensure security, and provide a seamless user experience to support and enable their staff and customers.

The first step was to upgrade the entire organisation to Windows 10 — reimaging all computers with a Standard Operating Environment (SOE) for all users.

When an organisation such as PARC decides to upgrade to a new operating system, thorough planning and testing is needed to avoid problems.

The Windows 10 upgrade project consisted of two phases — a pilot program to identify any issues or bugs, followed by a full controlled deployment across PARC’s remaining environment. The pilot program saw Windows 10 rolled out to a cross-section of the business, to ensure all business units were covered. These users tested the image for a week and a half. During the testing stage Kiandra identified a couple of minor issues, and was able to rectify these before deploying Windows 10 across the wider organisation. Given the nature of PARC’s business, phase two of the project — the full roll-out of Windows 10 — involved a high level of coordination and planning to avoid any downtime or disruption during peak periods. For the Kiandra project team timing was essential, all works were timed to the minute and staggered around the differing peak times for PARC’s various departments and business units.

The end result was a successful deployment, with Kiandra leveraging learnings from the pilot program to avoid repeat issues during the wider roll-out.

Kiandra provided technical governance, documentation, best practice recommendations for design, testing and implementation, deployment and management of Windows 10, as well as change and post-deployment support.

We’ve been working with Kiandra for a number of years, so when we were looking for a partner to deploy Windows 10 they were our first choice. Migrating to a new operating system is always risky but with Kiandra the move was straightforward.
Our over-arching goal for the project was to stay at the current level of technology and enable our people with fit-for-purpose IT. With Windows 10 we’ve achieved that, and we look forward to the next phase of our technology journey.

With simplified cloud integration, enhanced productivity toolsets, fully encrypted mobile data, and streamlined remote access to networks and applications, the implementation of Windows 10 is already delivering benefits for PARC.
PARC are now at the forefront of technology, operating in an environment where they can take advantage of Microsoft updates and embrace new features as soon as they are released.

Additional benefits for PARC include:
  • Enterprise-grade security, identity and malware protection
  • Automation, consistency and scalability
  • New hardware easily integrated, without changing the base SOE
  • Fast turnaround for reimaging or replacing failed computers, minimising user downtime
  • Centralised management of custom settings.
