Murdoch Childrens Research Institute - SAEFVIC Reporting System
Overview
SAEFVIC, the Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Vaccination In the Community is a public health partnership initiative of the Victorian Immunisation Program funded by the Department of Health, Victoria. This specialist service has been established to help immunisation providers report and care for children and adults who have had an Adverse Event Following Immunisation (AEFI).
SAEFVIC is based at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute within the Royal Children’s Hospital. It provides specialised clinics that offer expert review and vaccination under careful supervision at Royal Children’s Hospital, Monash Medical Centre and Royal Melbourne Hospital.
An AEFI may be due to:
- A problem with the vaccine
- A problem with the system delivering the vaccine (from vaccine distribution through to injection technique)
- Coincidence, i.e. an event that would have happened if no immunisation was given
By collating as much information as they can about AEFI, SAFEVIC aim to detect problems with vaccines or systems as early as possible. This helps to ensure Victoria has a safe immunisation program and to maintain the community confidence in immunisation programs.
Kiandra’s implementation of the SAEFVIC Reporting System as a web-based service provides unprecedented access for immunisation providers in reporting adverse events, facilitating an increase in reported cases over the previous in-house system.
Benefits of the SAEFVIC Reporting System
- SAEFVIC offers individualised assessment on the adverse event and outlines options regarding future vaccinations
- Following significant adverse reactions, the next immunisation dosage can be given under supervision at specialised clinics, or as a monitored hospital inpatient
